With Fall right around the corner, concerns about the flu virus have started to resurface. This month on the 1MedicalSupply blog, you can read about the ongoing controversy surrounding the flu vaccination and whether or not healthcare providers should be required to become vaccinated. Surprisingly, a large number of healthcare providers do not voluntarily get vaccinated, but proponents of mandatory vaccination maintain that these vaccinations are important for protecting healthcare workers as well as their patients.

When you visit the 1MedicalSupply blog, you will also learn more about a variety of different health-related studies. For example, recent studies have found that the popular DASH diet does reduce the risk of heart attack, although simply adding more fruits and vegetables to the typical American diet also yields positive results. Learn more about this study and how the DASH diet can help keep your heart healthy at the 1MedicalSupply blog.

Interestingly, additional research has found that Omega-3 fatty acids may not provide the level of protection to the heart that was once believed. Of course, more research is necessary in this area to come to any definite conclusions. Researchers have also uncovered an interesting link between diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease, which could potentially lead researchers toward a method for protecting the brain from this devastating condition.

This is only a small sampling of what you will see when you visit the 1MedicalSupply blog. Of course, you will also enjoy great prices on home medical supplies and other products when you visit our Website. So, start learning more about the healthcare world while saving money by visiting the 1MedicalSupply.com blog today!

You have probably given a great deal of thought to getting healthier. Whether you have a specific health goal, such as quitting smoking or getting in shape, or you just generally want to be a healthy person, there is no better time than now to start working toward achieving that goal. To get yourself moving in the right direction, here is a checklist of things you can do to enjoy a healthier future.

Visit Your Doctor

The first thing you need to do is to visit your doctor for a checkup. By meeting with your doctor, you can get a better idea of your current health situation. Not only will this help you prepare a diet and exercise program that is appropriate for your health, it will also give you a baseline from which you can judge your progress. Remember, getting healthier isn't just about shedding pounds, it is also about getting your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar levels and other health factors in order.

Know What to Avoid

To lead a healthier lifestyle, you should also read the labels of the foods you plan to eat and should avoid eating anything that contains the following words on the ingredients list:

  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Sugar
  • Enriched
  • Trans fat
  • Saturated fat

Ideally, you should completely avoid foods with these words on the ingredients list. If you can't cut these foods out completely, look for foods where these ingredients are located at the bottom of the list rather than the top.

Know What to Include

Just as you should avoid eating certain foods, there are others that you should try to include in your diet. These include foods that are rich in the following:

Anti-oxidants - examples include pinto beans, kidney beans, red beans, broccoli, tomatoes, artichokes, blueberries and dried prunes.
Omega 3 Fats - examples include flax seeds, walnuts, scallops, salmon, squash and soybean.
Fiber - examples include whole wheat breads and pastas, raspberries, apples, bananas, almonds, sunflower seeds and peas

Get Plenty of Exercise

In order to keep your body strong and flexible, it is important for you to include regular exercise into your routine. Try to get your heart rate up for at least 60 minutes each week and do at least 30 minutes of strength training each week. Doing 5 minutes of stretching exercises each day is also beneficial.

Get Enough Sleep

Many adults fail to get enough sleep each night. In order to function properly, most people need 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep each night. If you have trouble getting to sleep, try to set up a regular bedtime routine so your body will get used to the idea that it is time to go to sleep. You should also avoid doing anything other than sleeping and having relations in the bedroom.

Keeping Diabetes in Check for the Holidays

With the holidays quickly approaching, it is time to start thinking about how to include friends and family with medical issues in all of the festivities. One of the toughest medical problem to contend with during this time of the year is diabetes. After all, it is essential for a diabetic to adhere to his or her diet in order to keep the condition in check. At the same time, there are so many great goodies being served throughout the holidays that it can be quite difficult to resist temptation.

If you or someone you care about is suffering from diabetes, you might want to keep a few things in mind as you prepare for the holidays. These include:

  • Create a schedule for your holiday festivities. This way, you can plan your meals in such a way that allows you to indulge in a few of your favorite foods without throwing your blood sugar levels out of whack.
  • Plan activities that are not food-centered. Tasty foods will inevitably be a part of your holiday festivities, but try to schedule fun events where food isn't the main attraction. This way, your loved ones won't feel left out of the festivities.
  • Develop a healthy menu. Many holiday feasts consist of nothing but foods that are full of sugars and fats. To help your diabetic friends and family, be certain to include healthy choices as well. You might also want to look up a few recipes that will help you make healthier varieties of your favorite traditional holiday meals.

For most diabetics, working in a treat or two is not going to be devastating. You may, however, need to get more exercise, eat less of other treats or even increase your insulin dosage in order to make certain you keep your blood sugar at the appropriate levels. If you aren't sure how to allow yourself to indulge without jeopardizing your health, speak to your diabetes educator or dietician to work out a plan. All this month, we will also be focusing on diabetes news and tips at the 1MedicalSupply blog, so stop by to learn more. And, don't forget that there are plenty of diabetes supplies available at 1MedicalSupply to help you stay healthy throughout the holidays and the rest of the year.

Happy Holidays and may you and your loved ones enjoy good health for the remainder of this year and the next!

Get Educated During National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is why we at 1MedicalSupply.com would like to remind you this month about the things you can do to help reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. Whether you are a man or a woman, breast cancer can affect you as both the victim as well as the loved one of someone who is suffering from the disease.

According to the United States Department of Human Services, 1,764 men as well as 186,467 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005. During that same year, 375 men and 41,116 women passed away from the disease. Shockingly, breast cancer is the second most common form of caner in women and is the leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic women.

Faced with these statistics, it is reasonable to want to know what you can do to reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. While there are some risk factors that can't be controlled, such as your age and your family heritage, there are several risk factors that you do have control over. These factors include:

• Using oral contraceptives (your risk is increased only while taking the medication)
• Never having children or waiting until you are over 35-years-old before having children
• Using hormone replacement therapy involving progestin and estrogen
• Consuming one or more alcoholic beverage each day
• Putting on weight after reaching 60-years-old or after menopause

There is also evidence to suggest that living a sedentary lifestyle and following a poor diet plan can also increase your chances of developing breast cancer. Therefore, you should be sure to follow a diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables while also making sure to get at least one hour of exercise every week.

With the help of the exercise equipment available at 1MedicalSupply, getting the exercise you need is a cinch. Our vibration plates, for example, can be used by people of all fitness levels. Or, check out our Spirit 630 Arm Cycle and or our Deluxe Mini Cycle Exerciser as other great ways to stay fit.

Of course, we also have plenty of supplies to help you or your loved one cope with breast cancer if it strikes. From pain management devices to daily living aids, we have you covered at the best prices possible.
